Poppy seeds effect
Even though it is posible that ancient Sumerian had known the psychological poppy seeds effects, the first indisputable reference from poppy juice it is found in the Teofratus’ writings from the third century b.c.. the poppy word by itself is a derived greek word that means “juice”, and the medicine is obtained from poppy juice (its scientific name is papaver somniferum). Islamic and Arabian countries used opium (it comes from poppies) as medicine and narcotic in the 6th century. Arabian tradesman introduced the medicine from the East where it was used to control dysentery mainly. It is attributed to Paracelsus (1493 to 1541) to have put in vogue the new poppy use in Europe after had fallen in unfavorable opinions about the poppy seeds effects (they have very high toxicity). Near half way through 16th century it was appreciated a lot of this substance’s applications. In 1680, Sydenham described “…from all remedies that the Almighty have served from to grant human for beings to relieve their pains, no one is so universal and so effective as poppy”. Poppy seeds have more than twenty different alkaloids. In 1806, Sertürner informed the isolation of a pure substance contained in poppy seeds to whom called morphine, in clear reference to Morpheus, the Greek God of dreams. In 1832, Robiquet isolated the codeine, and Merck in 1848 the papaverine. Near half way through 19th century started to spread around the medical world the use of plain alkaloids, instead of those prepared from brute poppy. Poppy has almost twenty-five different alkaloids that appear in combination with meconium acid (which is present a 5%) and sulphuric acid. The alkaloid content (so the poppy seeds effect) can vary according to the different sorts of poppies and where they had grown up. The most important añkaloids are morphine ( 9% to 20%), and nicotine (2% to 8%). The rest of alkaloids, all toghether make up approximately just 1% of the substance. This drying latex from the unripe capsules of papaver somniferum was marketed long ago with the name of the following preparations: poppy dust, Dover dust, poppy tincture, camphorated poppy tincture, papaveretum and nepenthe.
The most visible poppy seeds effect is as sedative, it is used fot its binding qualities in diarhoea, dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing), dysentery and some sorts of cough. Their actions are essentially those of morphine though is enough excited because of other alkaloids presence, some of which as codeine boost the analgesic morphine action while papaverine reduces its tendency to provoke nausea and vomit. The difficulty in breathing is less when papaverine is present.
The worst poppy seeds effect is death. This lethal effect takes place when individuals get a poppy overdose in oral form or intravenous injections, usually drug addicts die from cardiac arrests.
